E-books vs. Print: Choosing the Right Format for TPRs

When it comes to using Target Practice Readers (TPRs) in the classroom, teachers have the option of using either print editions or e-books. Both formats offer unique advantages, and the choice between the two depends on your teaching style, classroom setup, and students' needs. In this post, we’ll compare the benefits of using e-books versus print versions of TPRs and help you decide which format is best for your students.
Advantages of Print TPRs
  1. Tactile Learning: Many young learners benefit from physically holding a book and turning its pages. For some students, the tactile experience of handling a print book can improve engagement and retention. Print TPRs are great for hands-on learners who thrive with traditional reading materials.
  2. Easy to Assign for Home Reading: Print TPRs can easily be sent home with students in their book bags. This makes it simple to assign reading homework or provide additional practice outside the classroom. Parents can also be more involved when their children bring home physical books.
  3. No Technology Required: Print TPRs are accessible to all students, regardless of their access to technology. This is particularly useful in classrooms or homes where devices are limited or internet connectivity is unreliable. Print books can be used anytime, anywhere, without the need for an electronic device.

Advantages of E-book TPRs
  1. Interactive Features: One of the main benefits of using the e-book version of TPRs is the interactive features that come with them. E-books often include audio support, allowing students to listen to the book being read aloud while following along. This is especially helpful for struggling readers who may need extra guidance with blending and decoding.
  2. Immediate Feedback: The e-book versions of TPRs also include comprehension quizzes that provide immediate feedback to students and teachers. These quizzes can help assess whether students have understood the story and mastered the phonics skills in the text.
  3. Classroom Technology Integration: E-books can be easily projected onto an interactive whiteboard, making them ideal for shared reading sessions. Teachers can use the e-book format to engage the whole class, highlight specific words, and model decoding strategies. Tablets and other devices also allow for easy access to TPRs in 1:1 or small group settings.
  4. Environmentally Friendly: E-books are a more sustainable option since they don’t require paper. If your school is aiming to reduce its environmental impact, using e-books can help achieve that goal.

When to Choose Print or E-book TPRs
  • Choose Print TPRs if:
    • You want to provide students with tactile learning experiences.
    • Your students need to bring books home for practice.
    • You have limited access to technology in the classroom.
  • Choose E-book TPRs if:
    • You want to use interactive features, such as audio support or quizzes.
    • Your classroom is equipped with tablets or an interactive whiteboard.
    • You want to assess comprehension and phonics mastery in real time.

Both the print and e-book versions of Target Practice Readers offer unique benefits that can enhance your phonics instruction. The choice between the two formats ultimately depends on your teaching style and the needs of your students. Print TPRs are ideal for tactile learners and traditional reading activities, while e-books provide interactive features and technology integration that can support digital learning. Consider using a combination of both formats to maximise the impact of TPRs in your classroom.
