How TPRs Can Be Used for 1:1 Reading at Home

Target Practice Readers (TPRs) aren’t just for the classroom—they can be an excellent tool for supporting independent reading at home. With fully decodable texts that align with students’ phonics knowledge, TPRs offer a structured way for children to practice reading in a home environment. In this post, we’ll discuss how to effectively use TPRs for 1:1 reading at home and how parents can support their children’s phonics learning.
The Benefits of Home Reading with TPRs
Home reading is an essential part of a child’s literacy development. When children read at home, they have the opportunity to reinforce what they’ve learned in the classroom and build their confidence as independent readers. TPRs, with their focus on specific letter-sounds and fully decodable texts, make home reading even more effective by providing the right level of challenge.

How to Use TPRs for 1:1 Reading at Home
  1. Assign Decodable Books Based on Phonics Progress: TPRs align with the phonics progression taught in programmess like Rocket Phonics, so it’s important to assign the right book based on what sounds the child has learned. When a new book becomes decodable based on classroom instruction, it can be sent home for the child to read independently or with minimal support.
  2. Encourage Independent Reading: One of the key benefits of TPRs is that they allow students to practice reading independently. Encourage children to read the TPR aloud at home, focusing on blending the sounds they’ve learned in school. Since the text is fully decodable, children should be able to read most of the words on their own, building their confidence and fluency.
  3. Provide Audio Support (e-book option): If you’re using the e-book version of TPRs, parents can take advantage of the audio support built into the platform. Children can listen to the book being read aloud while following along in the text, helping to reinforce their phonics knowledge. This is particularly useful for struggling readers or those who need extra support with blending and decoding.
  4. Make Home Reading a Routine: Consistency is key when it comes to home reading. Set aside time each day for children to read their TPRs at home, either independently or with a parent or caregiver. Making reading part of the daily routine ensures that children get the practice they need to solidify their phonics skills.
  5. Provide Feedback and Praise: Parents should offer plenty of encouragement and praise as children read. Celebrate small successes, such as correctly blending sounds or decoding a tricky word. Positive reinforcement helps motivate children to keep practicing, which is essential for developing strong reading skills.

Target Practice Readers are an ideal resource for 1:1 reading at home. By providing decodable books that align with students’ phonics knowledge, TPRs allow children to practice reading independently while building their confidence and fluency. Whether using print or e-book formats, TPRs offer a structured and effective way to support home reading. Encourage parents to make home reading a regular routine, and watch as students make great strides in their reading journey.
