Phonics Intervention and Reading Support for Key Stage 3+ Students 

An increasing number of students arrive at secondary school without the essential literacy foundations necessary for the Key Stage 3 curriculum, presenting a critical challenge. To address this, we have developed a phonics intervention programme that is easy to use and importantly is presented in an age appropriate way. Additionally, it proves especially effective in specialised settings, supporting older students with SEN and SEMH needs.

Key Stage 3+ Training and Support

​We offer a range of training and support options to help you implement and embed the KS3+ Phonics and KS3+ Reading Support programmes effectively in your setting. All options include 12 months of access to our online training portals.

OPTION 1: KS3+ Phonics Portal – £325 per organisation
Includes:

• Core KS3+ Training Videos – self study to support staff in delivering phonics interventions
• Downloadable teaching materials (KS3+ Teacher Handbook and 3 x Student Workbooks)
• 12-month access to share freely amongst staff

OPTION 2: KS3+ Reading Support Programme Portal – £325 per organisation
Includes:

• Reading Support Training Videos - self study for staff on how to implement the KS3+ Reading Support Programme
• Decodable reading book lists and activity packs to support student reading
• 12-month access to share freely amongst staff
• Works alongside the KS3+ Reading Support Book Packs (available separately via Peters)

OPTION 3: Personalised Webinar Training – £495+VAT (2 hours)

• A live online session (Zoom, Teams) for small or large groups of staff
• Covers either KS3+ Phonics or KS3+ Reading Support Programme
• Ideal as an introduction to KS3+ Phonics, or to broaden knowledge
• Tailored to your setting’s needs

This package also includes 12 months of access to either the KS3+ Phonics or KS3+ Reading Support portals.​

OPTION 4:​ Comprehensive Webinar Bundle – £990+VAT 
Includes two 2-hour webinars, tailored to your setting’s needs. You can choose from the following options:

• Core KS3+ Phonics Training – Essential phonics strategies and programme implementation
• KS3+ Reading Support Training – How to implement the reading support programme and use decodable books effectively
• Phonics and Literacy Leadership – Strategies for literacy leads and whole-school phonics planning
• Programme Implementation Support – Guidance on embedding phonics and reading support across your setting
• Supporting Struggling Readers and Reading for Pleasure – Helping students engage with reading and develop fluency

This package also includes 12 months of access to both the KS3+ Phonics and KS3+ Reading Support portals.​

OPTION 5:​ In-School Training Day – £1,395+VAT 
A full day of face-to-face training delivered by an experienced consultant, tailored to your setting’s needs. This includes two training sessions, chosen from the following options:

• Core KS3+ Phonics Training – Essential phonics strategies and programme implementation
• KS3+ Reading Support Training – How to implement the reading support programme and use decodable books effectively
• Phonics and Literacy Leadership – Strategies for literacy leads and whole-school phonics planning
• Programme Implementation Support – Guidance on embedding phonics and reading support across your setting
• Supporting Struggling Readers and Reading for Pleasure – Helping students engage with reading and develop fluency

These are just examples, and any bespoke needs can be discussed and accommodated.

FAQs

Is KS3 Phonics validated by the DfE? 
There is no requirement for KS3 Phonics, nor phonics training/trainers, to be DfE validated. The SSP validation process was only applicable to mainstream infant programmes, however, AST Ltd is validated as a training company because of our partnership with Hachette publishers for Rocket Phonics, and Abigail Steel is a DfE validated phonics author.

We would like to order print copies of the materials but our organisation doesn't like us to order from Amazon, can you help?
Yes, you can order directly from us and we will deliver them to you. Use the contact form below to enquire about this. ​

We'd like someone to come to our school for the day to support us, but what would the agenda look like? 
We're flexible to fit training or consultancy sessions around your school day and we build the agenda with you to suit your requirements.
A typical day might be 2 hours of consultancy (a review of current practice) in the morning followed by 2 hours of training in the afternoon.
Another example might be 4 x 1 hour workshops starting at 9am or 10am with coffee breaks in between.

We're thinking about booking an online 2 hour webinar style training, what would the content of that session cover? 

• How to use the KS3 Phonics materials 
• Phonics subject knowledge (What is Phonics?)
• How to be successful with teaching phonics

Does the 2 hour webinar need to be held at a particular time of day? 
We can work around your timings for a 2 hour webinar. Example start times could include 9.30am, 1pm or 3.30pm. 

We would like a bigger package of support - maybe two days in-school followed by some remote support, can you do that?

We only want the KS3 Phonics materials and not any training, where can we get the PDF booklets? 
Research shows that phonics teaching and learning is more effective when teachers have received training, that's why we have combined an entry level package of the PDF materials along with the cost-and-time-effective solution of a pre-recorded video course.

We've got the KS3 Phonics video course but we can't see the materials, where are they? 
The PDF download for each booklet is located alongside each of the corresponding videos, for example, the Teacher Handbook PDF download is found directly underneath the Teacher Handbook video. There is also a separate section titled 'Resources' where you can download the materials.
